Sabina Semiz is Professor at the Genetics and Bioengineering program and the former Deanof the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, International University of Sarajevo (IUS). Prior to this appointment she was teaching at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sarajevo.
Prof. Dr. Semiz completed her PhD at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and her postdoctoral work at the Program in Molecular Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School, in Worcester, MA, USA. Between 2005-2007 she worked as a principal investigator in the Cytrx Corporation, MA, USA, and in the Epic Therapeutics, Inc., Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Norwood, MA, USA, where she developed PROMAXX Microspheres for the in vivo gene therapy. Prof. Dr. Semiz is leading research projects in the area of genomics and pharmacogenomics of Type 2 diabetes as well as in regards to the bioethical aspects of genetic testing and personalized therapy. She participates as a member of consortium in several international projects (COST Project of European Commission, MetGen, and PGENI Project). She is a member of the Management Committee for the COST action titled “Citizen's Health through public-private Initiatives: Public health, Market and Ethical perspectives”. Prof. Semiz is an expert in the Evaluation panel for the Horizon 2020 Programme and COST Action for Medical and Health Sciences, as well as an expert in the field of Medical sciences within the Ministry of education and sport Montenegro, and within the Agency for Development of Higher Education and Quality Assurance in BH. Since 2015 Prof. Dr. Semiz is appointed as the Head of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. She is also a member of the International World Bioethics Day Committee.
